Can technology ensure better treatment for breast cancer patients?

Two large international companies have created a product which is intended to ensure the best possible treatment for patients with breast cancer. And it is coming to the UK.

Two heads are better than one

Two large international companies joined forces, shared their knowledge, and created a product, intended to ensure that every single case of breast cancer receives treatment, most optimal for the individual, thereby ensuring the best possible result based on the available resources. You might be lucky that this product is available to your oncologist, ensuring the most optimal treatment for your type of breast cancer as well as the best possible prognosis – because the product is coming to the UK.

IBM share their knowledge of data analysis and machine learning, while Novartis share their knowledge of breast cancer; this has resulted in a product capable of helping breast cancer patients all over the world. The product is a machine with artificial intelligence, which can analyse patient data, clinical studies, and data from millions of studies within seconds, thereby providing greater insight in the expected results that different treatment options will have on the individual patient.

Breast cancer is an illness, which is studied in many countries, and new knowledge is rapidly generated making it difficult for the individual physician to keep track. New results are perpetually generated regarding the optimal course of treatment for the specific type of breast cancer. This results in uncertainty regarding which treatment is applicable to the individual patient.

The product, called Watson, is capable of analysing the ever-growing wealth of data, and use it to choose the course of treatment – a combination of products, duration, intervention, etc. – best suited to the individual case. Watson is to be the physician’s right hand, helping to ensure the best possible results for each patient by compiling large quantities of data and providing the best course of treatment.

The product is coming to the UK

The good news is that ‘Dr. Watson’ is being implemented in the UK. Thereby, the hope is that future breast cancer treatments will be the most optimal course of treatment for the individual patient, and ensure that as many patients as possible are cured. The growing number of breast cancer cases, compared to the number of specialists, strain the system; the implementation of Dr. Watson is meant to improve the situation.

By continually accumulating experience and knowledge in the field of medicine, it is advantageous to physicians and patients alike that two large companies have joined forces and created a product capable of ensuring that this knowledge is utilised and used to offer the patient the best possible treatment.
